Porvoo Jazz Club: Josefiina Vannesluoma & Mortal Lease
Jazz singer and composer Josefiina Vannesluoma, along with her band Mortal Lease, will take the stage at the Porvoo Jazz Club. In their music, century-old poems transform into sensual jazz expression. The debut album ”The Mortal Lease,” nominated for the 2023 Jazz Emma award, features not only Vannesluoma but also young top musicians: pianist Mikael Myrskog, double bassist Nathan Francis, and drummer Ville Luukkonen, along with Sampo Kasurinen on alto flute, clarinet, and tenor saxophone. The artistic producer for the album, alongside Vannesluoma, was Markus Kärki, who has also made notable contributions to the Signé To Sappho album and the Game Music Collective’s audio productions.
The album’s title and the source of the lyrics come from Edith Wharton’s poetry collection The Mortal Lease, whose ornate sonnets tell tales of summer romance, zest for life, and the search for meaning. The band’s debut is a nuanced collection, with moods ranging from ecstatic outbursts to restrained elegance. Influences from various music styles blend seamlessly into the rootsy storytelling of the jazz ensemble.
Vannesluoma, previously recognized as a Teosto Prize and Emma nominee, has showcased her innovative compositions and beautiful sound in bands such as Signe, Nossa Bossa, and Mikko Sarvanne Garden.
Delicious snacks and drinks will be served by Aatos After Work, which is open all day until the evening.
